There are certain types of music that never seem to grow old for me. Lo-fi hip-hop is one of those genres for me. How anyone could not like simple beats mixed with random chill sounds astounds me. One artist that I’ve been listening to this past week is waffle. Jalen, waffle, is a 17 year-old lo-fi producer based out of Cleveland, Ohio. The amount of catchy beats he creates regularly is nothing short of impressive. Jalen informed me that he doesn’t have an exact strategy for finding inspiration but finds it in everyday life or walking through the gardens near his house.
Logic Pro X and the brilliant SP-404 are his weapons of choice as he hopes to go straight hardware eventually. He samples for almost all his beats if they meet the criteria of “lot of bassline” and “doesn’t get old after 2 minutes of looping”. In five years, Jalen dreams of being on a label putting out music frequently.
waffle‘s suggested artists: gavin, jar jar jr, paysndu, sulu
You can find waffle on soundcloud (listen to “exposition” below) and buy/stream his latest collab. album that came out on bandcamp last month:
